The birth of a Wind Deflector

The Birth of a Wind Deflector

To add to my inventory this wind deflector was the next choice. I’d seen plenty of these for sale in 4mm glass & acrylic which serve their purpose, but lacked substance & the finesse of a Pippens Wind Deflector. Firstly I purchased a slightly damaged original wind deflector to determine the size, shape & how it was attached to the car. After precisely measuring all dimensions including thicknesses i could make a drawing that I could send to my CNC software .

The next step was to make the drawing readable by my CNC machine.. Then i made a wooden mock-up of the wind deflector, just to check the dimensions. (no point in wasting valuable Perspex, right? )

From the plywood mock-up I could check that my original measurements were right .. Phew!!.. They looked great. Time to make the next model of wind Deflector in Perspex

Wind Deflector test fitting

I double checked the measurements on the Perspex wind deflector, polished the top edge & added a frosted/etched effect vinyl graphic to make it look sexy… But how would I really know if it actually fitted the car unless I had one to try it on?.. I needed to find an owner of this model of car.. I was already a member of a few related groups on Facebook so I placed a shout-out for any owners close to me.. ! guy came forward and we arranged to meet in Belfast for me to test fit the wind deflector in his car..

It didnt fit!!!…. aarrgghh !!… However after a very slight adjustment while I was with him, I sanded a little bit off the top 2 retaining corners , tried it again & perfecto!!!… A success!!!. I gave that guy the wind deflector , as a gift for allowing me to use his car & for meeting me in the 1st place. Thanks Alan!

Success!

When I got home I made the necessary adjustment to the CNC program. Since then this model of Wind Deflector has been a great success with awesome feedback from every customer from as far as Thailand & U.S.A.
